A VITAL BRIDGE BETWEEN OWN TENANCY AND CARE HOME ENTRY
Opened in January 2009, Madelvic Square is a new waterfront housing development in Edinburgh. Created by Edinburgh City Council and NHS Lothian, in partnership with Cairn Housing Association, it aims to deliver a Housing Support Service to older people with varying impairments and support needs, including dementia. Accommodation consists of seven two bedroom flats and seven one bedroom flats – all with living room, kitchen and shower room. All flats are accessible by lift and the building enjoys a communal roof garden. A warden is on site seven days a week from 8am to 10pm, providing assistance and meals. Overnight cover is provided remotely by Edinburgh's Community Alarm Service.
Independent living for longer
The residents of seven of the flats have high care needs, such as blindness and cognitive impairment. These residents have elected directly, or through relatives holding power of attorney, to take advantage of the unique MyAmego monitoring system. "MyAmego passively monitors risks and mobility, to alert staff when assistance is required – thereby allowing these residents both to participate in community living and enjoy the full safety of their own homes," says the development's Occupational Therapist, Paddy Corscadden. "It also allows us to be proactive in identifying potential problems associated with lack of movement and lack of normal activity such as toilet visits." With MyAmego in operation, people who otherwise were within a month of care home entry, can remain independent at Madelvic Square. "Indeed, one of our high-care residents actually came out of a care home to live with us", says Donna Fleming, Edinburgh Council's Telecare Projects' Manager. "An essential feature of MyAmego is its ability to provide activity reports, for both internal review and care commission inspection – where Donna is proud to report, "it ticked all the boxes for better care delivery."
